C10L Lycette Saddle Springs - Sourcing Replacements
« on: February 09, 2016, 08:24:22 PM »
I am trying to find the correct springs to replace the old (rusty and "tired") originals on the Lycette Saddle on my 1954 C10L.  Clearly the Saddle is the Lycette "Small" model but all the springs supplied as replacements for that model are made to fit via a vertically mounted bolt at the Saddle end and a horizontal bolt at the Frame mounting point. My original springs are vertical bolts at both ends.  I made the mistake a buying replacement springs for the "large" Lycette based on the web site photo and found they were slightly longer (not a big issue for installing) but the number of coils, wire gauge larger and the strength much too high i.e. hardly moves under normal load compression. See photos attached.

Does anybody know where I can source the correct replacements?

Is the black spring the original size (lenght ca. 160mm?) you need?

Yes, the "black" spring is the original that was chromed but has been painted by a previous owner to hide the corrosion (rust).  I am looking for replacements for the "black" springs which are length 160mm and approx 54mm at the widest coil.

Active Springs in Redditch will make exact replicas at a reasonable price.  Much cheaper in the end than trawling the auto jumble stalls.

I have now collected the info on possibilities.  The option are:

2 brand new springs, manufactured to the pattern of the old parts, = £49 + vat

Re chrome the old parts = £50.

Without finding any available spares it looks like to new parts, as a 1 off manufacture, is the best option.  Anybody else want some new springs to try and bring own the set up price?

Can anyone confirm that the saddle springs for a C10L are the same as the C10 and C11? And are the Lycette springs the same as Terry's?

Hi,
Have you tried Martin Bratby for the springs ?
He has had a fair few different springs remade

We have an auto-jumble a week on Sunday . The last springs I got from there were €25 for the pair. I'll look there if it wil help.  8)  Griff

Hi Griff,

If you can source the same type of springs (see my photo in the starting message - 160mm long, rugby ball shape) at this auto jumble please let me know ASAP.  I can't understand yet why the Lycette saddle on my C10L has created such a problem in finding replacement springs when it appears to be absolutely original (per the BSA parts catalog and frame fixing points) and they made so many of the model.

Bon chance..
