c11g vented petrol cap
« on: June 13, 2019, 10:21:26 am »
Hi, I want to take my c11g out and leave it where I live, rather than my distant garage.  It will be under cover but will be exposed to the elements, to some extent.  I'm more concerned about tampering and so I want to find a lockable petrol cap.
The only one 2.5 inch lockable petrol caps that I have found are not vented.
Will the still breathe through the lock?
Can I drill a lockable cap to vent it?
If I can't can I put a small hole in the tank?
Do you know of a way to lock the oil cap?  Currently I'm thinking of a metal band around the neck with a section of it over the top of the oil cap and then a padlock to secure it in place.

Many thanks for your replies...

By the time you've spent money and faffed around with it, you'd be better off losing a gallon of petrol IMO.

It's not the losing of the petrol that worries me.  It is the inserting of foreign objects/liquids into the tank by kids messing around.

Well buy the lockable cap. I'm sure you could drill a tiny hole in a suitable place to vent it.

Buy a decent bike cover that has a means of locking it.

If a little darling just wants the petrol why bother with a locking cap they would probably just snip the pipe at the tap or worse use a battery drill to hole the tank. I can understand wanting to put locking devices on to stop idiots contaminating the fuel/oil though, if it was my bike I would rather put it in the lockup no matter if it is a little way off.

I'm afraid it is sad fact these days they are much more likely to steal the bike completely, wreck it and burn it out on the common :(....and be too stupid to realize they could break it and make some money selling the parts ::)
Get it out of site and as secure as you can would be my advice.

And what about insurance?
To get any cover against theft, in my experience, you have to declare it's kept it in a locked garage/shed.

i live in Jersey, where there is little to none theft.  But there is a chance that the fuel/oil might be contaminated.

I am looking at the following cap, but I can't see how it might actually fit into my petrol tank.

I guess I should just purchase it, and see, and try and return it if it won't fit.

If it's for any vehicle it should be vented. Can't you contact the supplier and ask?

I can see no reason why that wont fit, as it is simply the same spring loaded bayonet fitting cap, with two locking retracting lugs shown in the locked position :-\.....and if it is being sold to fit BSA's etc, it will be vented.
Feked wouldn't be selling it if not, I'm sure.

The first thing my insurance company want to know (Coral Nash) is are my car and bikes locked up at my home address at night before they renew my insurance every year.
