tyres & nuts and bolts - any recommendations?
« on: November 12, 2019, 01:31:08 pm »
I spoked up the rear wheel of my 1953 C10 yesterday and am wondering if anyone has a recommendation for tyres with a reasonable modern performance but that have patterning that looks vaguely period?

Vintage Tyre company is my usual supplier and I shall be placing an order in the next few months for Avon SMs for my 1975 combination.

Meanwhile the engine is ready and the frame parts painted but I have no nuts and bolts to put everything together - any recommendations there for what to go for (plain steel or stainless) and where to shop?
Stainless might not have a true period look but, up here on the west coast of Scotland, the maritime air rusts most things in short order.

Thanks!

I've been a fan of stainless fasteners for many years and they look fine if the correct shape is used, Mr T, but others may disagree. I'll usually put the bike together with cheap metric bolts and nuts while sorting out the correct BSC jobbies.

I run an Avon Ribbed on the front and a Dunlop look-alike on the rear from Vintage Tyres and they're absolutely fine. They don't last long in modern grippy rubber but I get about 5000 miles out of a rear and double that from the front on my 650 twin.

Hi, I have always used The Tyre Finder and his service and knowledge is second to none. He advertises in The Old Bike Mart. He has just supplied me with a pair of 2.75 x 19" tyres for my !954 C11G and they arrived two days after ordering. £110 for two tyres, tubes and rim tapes. May be worth a call.

I thought 3.00 x 19 was the standard fitment for a C?

+1 for Mitas. Good tyres at a good price.
