Dynamo for a 1945 C11
« on: November 08, 2020, 03:20:42 pm »
I have a dynamo that came on my 1945 C11 that I believe is a Lucas E3HW. It is short but has no markings on it because the body is badly corroded. What model dynamo did BSA use on the 1945 C Series? I just want to make sure I have the correct one and if it doesn't work then what I need to hunt down?

cheers

Tony

According to the Lucas parts list, the right dynamo for Cs Series is an E3L from 49 till 53, reference 20010 (plus a letter from A to K, could change from year to year), anticlockwise.
Am I right in saying that the Lucas E3L is longer than then 1945 E3HW and E3HM series that I think I may have. I've noticed that the E3L has two fieldcoil screws on the main body whereas mine only has one.
Will am E3L fit my bike or do i need the shorter E3H series?

thanks
Tony

I believe the h is the one you want.
I'll dig up mine and check.

Lucas E3H model 200424 Anti-clockwise direction taper shaft is the one from my Lucas book.

My ‘51 C11 motor has an E3L fitted to it.  That dynamo fits but access to the end cap is a problem as it sits hard behind the primary case.

The primary case ( and the rest of the bike) is ‘54 C10L which is an alternator bike, so hence the lack of clearance for the dynamo.

You may not have that problem if yours isn’t a hybrid like mine.

E3L makes more watts than E3H I think.

For the 49 onwards model the engine breather was moved to allow for the longer E3L dynamo. The end cover was always close with the E3L.

Thanks Owen for the serial number and type, I'm assuming the one I have is correct for the bike, its definately the shorter one that has the single field coil fixing instead of the two fixings that an E3L has. I'll look into getting it checked out I think

After the great info from Owen I've started stripping down my existing dynamo and the main body shell is in pretty bad heavily corroded condition. Does anyone out there have a spare Lucas E3H model 200424 Anti-clockwise direction taper shaft dynamo they'd be willing to sale, or parts of same item (mainly body shell). Please PM me if you have such a beasty on your shelves.

thanks
Tony

I think you have the correct E3H short dynamo for a ‘45 bike.  The longer E3L might not fit if the breather is going to foul it.

I took my dynamo to an electric motor rewinding workshop and some of the grey bearded blokes sorted it out pretty quickly and cheaply.  It is just an electric motor in reverse basically.

The corroded case is just cosmetic.  A wire brush and some filler will make it look pretty. As long as the case can earth to the engine body you’ll be right.

Whilst I agree with you Ginge, I'm a bit worried that after I've cleaned it, filled it and painted it, that it won't any longer be a good earth. I'll keep trying to find a better body in the meantime as yes you're right, I do already have the shorter E3H as a basis

The bodies were originally nickel plated, but you could do with a nicer body for that. At least with paint, you can put lots of high build primer on first. Ron

I'll keep looking for a better quality body in the meantime. There's one on Fleabay at the moment from the Channel Islands, but it £120.00 and obviously non working. Me thinks £120.00 is a lot when i only really need the body!
