Hard to tell from the pictures but could that old "washer" be an oil seal from a sealed bearing. I have heard that some owners use a sealed bearing and leave the outer seal in place, only removing the inner one. Maybe a previous owner just fitted a bearing with the seals on both sides? Just a thought. Cheers, Roland.

Possibly Roland, although I didn't find the other side of the bearing seal on the crank.
New bearing and washers now fitted. Case in oven, bearing in freezer and it slid straight in. And really tight now back to room temp.
Thanks all

Update -
Just had it running with new washer and crank bearing (NB The old bearing seemed fine but wasn't such a close fit to crank) and the whirring has completely gone. It sounds grand now.
Thanks everyone
