Running batteryless ???

Hi guys ! Long time since being on here .. wanted to see if anyone could help me figure this out .. trying to run my 1951 Bsa c11g without a battery .. has anyone done this or had experience trying this ? Would really appreciate any and all help thank you !! This is my bike for point of reference

Can you confirm you running an Alternator.

There's plenty of data + personnel experience of running Alternator bikes without a battery, as for Dynamo driven bikes ?

Basically it comes down to rectification to convert from AC to DC, then some form of voltage control - as a Lucas Alternator can produce upwards of 30V when revved.

In the UK, on our CCM/B25/B50 we use a cheap (£12) Ebay 4wire rectifier/regulator - Wassel ignition (12V) and either a very small battery (2Ah), a capacitor (from an old TV) or nothing ................
The latter option came about when the battery fell off during an Enduro, and was'nt noticed until 2-3 hours later when loading bike onto trailer ..... Not certain if we'd recommend it, but they certainly start and run ok without anything!

I'd, tend to fit a large capacity, +50V Capacitor instead of nothing - it will help starting and replicates the non-battery LUCAS 'energy transfer' system without using rare Rotor/Stator/points-cam parts.

Rupert Ratio C15/B25 book - has an excellent chapter on this subject, as it was fitted to several C15/B40/B25/B44/B50 engines

Well the picture looks like there is a dynamo in place. I do like the seat suspension!

Whether it is your style or not, there is no denying there is a lot of fine work there.....I actually like it, the more I look at it :D

As a concept it looks great. However, practical it is not with that hand change! IMHO.

Soooooo interesting array of comments .. some helpful some utterly useless.. there's a theme in the motorcycle world and it's sestemic .. if it ain't what you think is correct that it couldn't possibly be true.. I know this sentiment all too well cause I participated in it as a builder. Short of safety concerns .. if you re not sure about a machines inner workings then ask questions .. don't make an assumption based on little marit... that just makes you the asshole... let me give some runway here ... I'm a structal engineer by trade.. I create and tune chassis for a living .. I joined this forum to get some feed back on some particulars about my machine... as for the for mentioned concerns ... you guys were correct about the lever but has since been rectified ... this bike has been gutted and blueprinted and improved .. I do not make trailer queens .. although very far from a race chassis .. it still falls in the premise of achieve a riding agenda... start, stop, go, brake, turn, shift... nothing more.. nothing less.. if you have real questions or answers please ask .. but do not assume .. it's not appreciated

I preloaded the internal bearing and put an external spring on it so it acts more like an indexing lever then a sloppy shifter

Just found this thread. I must have been AWOL at the time. I've edited and removed most of it as it was quite abusive at times, and we never heard from Harveyguy again. Shame.
Very interesting bike in my view.

Me too! I think I vaguely remember the bike and I also like it. But whether I liked it as a concept or not, I'm still very interested in the engineering expertise involved. I hope he comes back with updates.

The thing about a special (and I've built one as some of you know) is that there is no criteria to follow. You build what you want to suit your own eyes or needs.   Ron

each to his own but not 100% sure about the no front mudguard thing over here. Even on a bicycle being constantly hosed down by dirty water can get a bit tiring and we do to get a lot of rain here -otherwise looks ok to me
