Spark plug out Steve and lay it on the the head.  Rocker cover off so you can see what the valves are doing.

Spark, fuel, compression.  The big three. All have to occur at the right time.  Seems the valve timing is off against the spark timing.

Keep fighting the battle.  I am down here!

Just got back to it yesterday, it was ignition timing, started first kick, runs really good none of that old top end clatter, really quiet. more power. One thing about pulling it apart was doing all the things that normally you wouldnt bother with, and finding parts that should be there that werent. When the outer cover was tightened it was hard to kick over in one position, the bush was jamming against cam, thicker gasket fixed that. The oil pump wouldnt turn freely when  cover tightened, probably had always been that way from whoever was in there last, machined a little off two gears, fixed that, the flow is twice what it was. Back together just in time for next WOF.

Nice work mate.

I know what you mean about doing all of the little jobs while you've got the thing in bits.  If you get them done it adds confidence in riding the thing more I reckon.
